What Makes a Home Unique to You?

If you’re already looking for someone to build you your dream home, you’ve probably already got an idea about you want it to look. Daydreaming about a home and how it will look is one of the most enjoyable parts about the building process (the most being the day you finally get to move in!), and comes with a lot of thought and planning, as well as inspiration!

Building a custom home allows you the perfect freedom to create a home that suits your lifestyle, rooms that properly house your family, living spaces that suit your entertainment, and other quirks and additions that allow for all sorts of activities and easy living. Are you a proficient chef who yearns for a butler’s pantry? A creative spirit that needs their own artsy space to make a mess of? A summer loving family that needs easy access to a cooling pool for those hot QLD summer days?

What would you add to your dream house?

There are so many ways to create the home of your dreams with the rooms that will let you live it. Building a custom home is the only way to ensure that the lifestyle you want can be fully realised.
Some of these options below may get you thinking:

Convenient bedrooms that surround an adjourning bathroom

If the parents get the glorious master suite with lavish bathroom, throw the kids a bone with their own adjoining bathroom stemming right from their rooms! Got some rooms at the back of the house? Looking to make some extra space? Joining two bedrooms with one bathroom can help save space, improve the flow of the home, and aid the liveability of its residents.

A restful retreat for the parents

Speaking of master suites and lavish bathrooms, carving out a space for the parents in the form of a bedroom or relaxation-only sitting room is a great way to grab some extra zzz’s or finally get around to doing something you (and not the kids) would like to do. If the kids can get a playroom, you can get a room for reprieve!

Alfresco dining for outdoor entertaining

When building a custom home a beautiful open plan or outdoor dining and living area is one of the most in-demand features for a modern Queensland home. A well-designed alfresco area gives your home a place to relax, unwind and enjoy a seemingly effortless meal with friends and family (though a custom designed alfresco kitchen can make it truly effortless). Alfresco areas are a practical way of adding more value to your home, both lifestyle and monetary.

The perfect home office for those working from home

When building a custom home a dedicated home office in your home gives you the practicality, privacy and productivity one needs when working from home or studying. Tailoring it to your work, hobby or study can help you get into that state of flow quicker. Making it somewhere you want to work makes work easier.

A cinematic home movie theatre

With thousands of films spread across multiple streaming services, it seems the cinema isn’t the only place to get the quality entertainment one wants on a weekend evening. Creating a home theatre that exudes comfort and the surround system of your dreams is easy with a custom home. Get the movie experience without the hassle (but all the more comfort!).

There are literally hundreds of ways to make your dream home custom and uniquely you. When it’s time to turn those ideas into a reality, give Oceanview Constructions a call where we specialise in custom homes…not just building houses.

2020 Bathroom Tile Designs and Trends to Look Out For!

When it comes to creating your dream bathroom, seeing it come together in the theme of your choice is the best part! But choosing the composition can be a bit overwhelming, especially when there are so many trends, themes and features to choose from!

Keeping your bathroom on-trend and perfectly attuned to your everyday needs is critical. Whether you’re looking for something more modern or classic, bright and bold, or smooth and simplistic.

Here are a few of 2020s most popular bathroom trends that we think you should check out!

Create a calming environment.
Homeowners are taking inspiration from boutique hotels and spas, transforming bathrooms into a calming space in which serenity and rejuvenation reign supreme. No longer just a place for hygiene and daily necessities, the bathroom is becoming a hub of its own, specifically for relaxation. Think calming blue and green hues, smooth and organic surfaces, minimalistic vanity and display and a streamlined look that resembles a more Hamptons style feel. Indulge in a bathroom that feels like five stars with the latest trend that’ll make you never want to leave your bathtub.

Bring in the bold and colourful statement pieces.
From bright orange to light blue, sparkling gold and brushed black, an increase in braver and bolder colours will see this trend lasting for a while. Evoke emotion in the colours you choose and character in the pieces you acquire that help your bathroom stand out from the rest and become a feature in and of itself. A great way to add colour and a bold statement is with feature tiles.

On-trend and here to stay, the choice of feature tiles allows you to tactfully reflect your style and personality, as well as inject instant charm and dramatic effect. Add zest to your bathroom with intricate design, innovative use of space, and eye-catching patterns.

Add in some feature points.
Feature points allow you to think outside the box with your design and add some character to achieve a bathroom perfectly tailored to you. By using different patterns, funky accessories, and exciting colours and materials, your bathroom gets to welcome a fresh design that entices the guest and creates personality.

Feature tiles are a great and easy way to emphasise a statement piece or a particular wall of the bathroom. Whether you want something behind the clawfoot tub, need a frame for the vanity mirror, or want to celebrate points of difference between wall and shower, feature tiles and walls are great for those who prefer a dramatic look that complements the elements.

At Oceanview Constructions, we assist you in choosing all your custom inclusions to encapsulate the aesthetic appeal of your custom designed home perfectly. As a Redlands and Brisbane Bayside Custom Home Builder, Oceanview Constructions strives to exceed your expectations.

Seriously Consider Making Your Staircase into its Own Feature!

In any house with more than one storey, a staircase is a prominent feature for those who need access the different levels of their home. As well as being an efficient and distinctively purposeful addition to your home, they can also be an aesthetic consideration that combines its functionality with ingenuity.

Your staircase doesn’t have to be boring! Depending on where you put it, it can be a striking feature that adds value and charm to your home and directly impacts the way your home design flows and how it is naturally lit.

A staircase has more power in opening up a home than one would realise. It creates scale and volume, even in a compact design. Placing it perpendicularly from your front door gives the impression that your house is longitudinal and lengthy, as well as leads the eye up to experience the full openness of your home.

Stairs are also an excellent opportunity to create privacy and an air of mystery to your home. Placing it parallel to your front door or amongst the main rooms of the house offers security and a visual blockage to more private areas of the family rooms and bedrooms upstairs.

There are a variety of materials you can use for the stairs themselves (the nosing and treads) such as timber, steel or carpet but the part of the staircase that allows for the most fun in design is the balustrade.

An essential component of any staircase, a balustrade is the railing that provides a safe and secure barrier for anyone travelling up or down your stairs. They can be used to visually separate your staircase from the rest of the room, offer privacy between levels, add aesthetic value to your home, and as a barrier for balconies and landings. They can be grandiose or simple, twirling and swirling or structured. The balustrade is where you get to have your fun in designing your feature staircase.

A balustrade design should suit the style of your home. Whether it is traditional or modern, the materials used, and the level of craftsmanship involved hold the key to a harmonious living space. There are numerous materials that can make up a balustrade. Here are our favourites!

Glass panels
Glass is generally the most popular vote for those with modern homes, particularly if the glass balustrading is frameless. The minimalistic design of glass balustrade remains visually appealing and contemporary no matter the home and it adds an air of clarity and utility that doesn’t impede on views.

Timber
Timber has a lustre that can be used for both modern and traditional designs. Raw or painted, timber is durable and classic, adding value to any home. Available so many variations, timber’s elegance and style lend a natural flair to any home and does well to match its environment. Perfect for both a Hamptons style home or a more industrial alternative, it’s hard to go wrong with timber.

Wire
Stainless steel wire under tension is popular for those seeking a more industrial look that is still adaptable to a modern home. Best paired with sturdy timber, the typically horizontally running wire lasts long and stays taut.

Wrought Iron
Favourably used as the primary material in construction for centuries, there’s a good reason why wrought iron is still a popular choice for both traditional and modern homes. With modern technology allowing for even more designs, balustrades can be tailored to any home and its specifications. One of the most durable materials on offer for balustrades, it is safe and robust, ensuring a long lifetime with no maintenance requirements.

At Oceanview Constructions, we assist you in choosing all your custom inclusions to encapsulate the aesthetic appeal of your custom designed home perfectly. Nestled in the heart of the Redlands and Brisbane Bayside, Oceanview Constructions strives to exceed your expectations.

How To Mix Colours When it Comes to Your New Home?

Should You Mix or Match When it Comes to the Colours in Your Home?

Some colours are timeless. Black, white, cream and grey are all regulars on the rotating roster. But some colours eclipse them, only for a moment, but still with enough aesthetic appeal and interest that many are tempted to indulge in the hue. One year it’s all about dusty pinks and brassy tones, the next it’s forest green and natural wood!

No matter the changing styles and subsequent colours you have chosen for your home then or now, it is always important to know when to match and when to contrast. The way you mix and match colours can make or break the aesthetic of your new home, no matter which colour trend it resides in.

The colour trends of 2020 have seen moodier hues take centre stage. Dark, rich colours that envelop us and turn our homes into the retreats we all crave, especially during these uncertain times. But with great darkened colours comes great responsibility, the way we match and contrast these winter shades in every space of the home makes or breaks a home’s uncanny wholesomeness.

So how do we correctly match and contrast colours in each area of the home? How do we make a cohesive colour palette that remains timeless and elegant in every room?

When it comes to the bathrooms of the house, should they all match?
The overall consensus is that although they don’t have to be replicas of each other, they should match the aesthetic of the home for optimal cohesion. Consider a theme. It’s essential to distinguish a unified look that will accent and tie your bathrooms together. Even if that theme is rainbow hues and outrageous décor, it still fits into the eclectic theme. An easy way to bring cohesion amongst bathrooms is the use of a feature wall in each. Whether they are the same or broken up amongst other accents, a feature wall of tile, stone, or exposed brick can help unify the utilities.

Should my kitchen cabinetry match? What about the benchtops?
Kitchen cabinetry can match, but it makes for a very dull palette. The best part about kitchen cabinetry and the kitchen itself is that you find yourself using cupboards and utilities both above and below the sink. Contrast the colours between the two for more personality and style. Two complimenting colours are better than one, and kitchen cabinetry allows you to the affordability and ease of displaying your unique tastes.

When it comes to benchtops, matching them with one of your contrasting cabinetry colours brings more cohesion to the whole space. But you can also use more textured and patterned pieces to enhance the kitchen’s aesthetic further. For example, combine dark, moody hues with soft beige and rustic natural wood for a winning combination of 2020’s top favourite colours.

Our team work closely with all our clients, assisting them in choosing all their custom inclusions to perfectly encapsulate the aesthetic appeal of their custom designed home. Nestled in the heart of the Redlands and Brisbane Bayside, Oceanview Constructions strives to exceed your expectations.

What Are Feature Walls and Why Should You Have One?

What Are Feature Walls and Why Should You Have One?

It’s the smallest details that make the biggest difference.

Building your dream home is a significant investment. For some, architecture, how the house will look from the street is the top priority. For others, the focus is the interior design portion of the build – the time they get to let their creativity speak for itself and really build a home custom and unique to them.
There’s a surprisingly simple yet often overlooked way to elevate the style and visual impact of your home while reinforcing your design. Feature walls…like standing out from the crowd, a feature wall impacts how a space looks and feels. As simple as this idea is, here is what we think of feature walls and why we believe every home should have at least one!

What is a feature wall?
A feature wall or statement wall is usually specified when the rest of the room is decorated in a neutral colour palette. By selecting one wall and applying paint, wallpaper, stone or other textured material, you create a feature. A feature wall emphasis the style of your home without the expense of having to decorate the entire room. This is a brilliant option for new homes when you plan on buying new furniture to complete the look of your custom home.

Feature walls can also be used on the outside of your new custom home. Think outside the box and dress up the façade with exposed brick, timber cladding, tile or stone. Whether you want a unique walkway, or a way to contrast upper and lower levels of the home for added interest and value, a feature façade lends your home your unique style while still standing out from the other homes in the street!

Where does a feature wall go?
The first step in creating a feature wall is choosing the right wall! At Oceanview Constructions, we pay careful attention to the details because it’s the small touches that make the biggest difference. We know the ins and outs of designing a feature wall and use our professional design expertise to guide you in the right direction.

When it comes to implementing a feature wall in your custom designed home, there are a couple of rules to follow:

  1. Find your focal point. You want a feature to be visible the moment you enter the space. Don’t randomly select just any wall to highlight. Think about which wall highlights the room’s existing focal point and where the eye is naturally drawn. If it’s a media room, the focal point would be the television, so painting the wall the tv will go on is a good option. The wall behind the headboard would be the feature star in the bedroom. Let the existing architectural design of the space be your guide and don’t be afraid to go bold.
  2. Make it fit. A feature wall shouldn’t be broken up around doorways or windows if possible, it shouldn’t have to compete with an already busy wall. When there is too much going on, it can confuse the viewers eye, a feature wall is the main character, so give it its own space!
  3. Watch the space. It’s best to give your feature wall some space to shine. A bold pattern or texture doesn’t distract or shrink a larger room, this is where open homes really come into their own. Try to refrain from putting a feature wall in a tiny space, it can make a room look cluttered if you’re not careful. Try adding a feature wall throughout the foyer or hallway as you welcome guests, especially if you have a grand entry.

house builders - house builder brisbane bayside

What are feature walls made of?
You can create a statement wall in a variety of materials. Paint is the easiest, quickest and most cost-effective, followed by wallpaper. If you’re looking for something that’ll command the space and really wow your guests, textured materials such as timber or natural stone are excellent for both interior and exterior feature walls.

Natural stone gives a home a timeless industrial look that creates organic warmth while adding a bold stylish texture. There are heaps of stone ranges and types to choose from to create an edgy, sophisticated look. A very popular option is a mosaic of natural stone built onto the façade of the house. Welcome your guests from the moment they pull up in the driveway with a feature wall that sets the mood and scene for the rest of the home.

Tiles are an obvious choice for any wet areas such as the bathroom, outdoor pool or dining areas. The possibilities are endless: large format tiles open up space while unique shapes and mosaic tiles create a mural that stuns.

At Oceanview Constructions we assist you in choosing all your custom inclusions to perfectly encapsulate the aesthetic appeal of your custom designed home. Nestled in the heart of the Redlands and Brisbane Bayside, Oceanview Constructions strives to exceed your expectations.

Choosing Land For Your Custom Home

  • June 25, 2020/

Choosing where you want to live is just as important as building your home. Why? Because that is where you and your family are going to live and grow while enjoying your custom built home. Therefore, it is important to consider the location, the cost and the quality of the land you are looking at purchasing.

Location and Size

Lets face it! No one wants to live somewhere they won’t enjoy. Therefore it is important to consider what is in the immediate location of the land you are looking at purchasing. Does it look like there are good neighbours? Are you near a main road? Will there be a lot of noise and traffic? These are all things to consider when choosing your land.

Size is also important to consider. Too small and you may be limited with the design of your home, especially if you plan on building big! Therefore, you need to think whether the land you are looking at is going to fit the size of the custom built home you need.

Cost and Quality

The cost and the quality of the land you choose pretty much goes hand in hand. It may seem cheap at first but you might have to spend a little bit more conditioning the soil so that it can be built upon. This can end up being the same cost as the other piece of land you were looking at but there was no work that needed to be done.

The quality of the soil is what makes all the difference in the land you choose. You can determine whether the soil is good for building by having a soil test performed on the land you are looking to buy. At Oceanview Constructions, we can organise a soil test for you to determine if the land can be built on and the cost of your foundations. If the soil is too soft your home will need extra support in the foundations, which will greatly affect your build costs.

Other Features To Consider In The Surrounding Area

Your immediate location is not the only thing to consider when choosing land for your custom built home. You also need to know if the suburb you choose is right for your family.

Some things you should be asking are whether there are decent schools if you have kids? Are there parks in your local area? Does the area have a low crime rate? Are there shops, dining out and entertainment facilities? All these things can determine not only where you would like to live, but also your lifestyle so choose carefully!

Bought your land and looking to build a custom built home? Contact a professional custom builder today and discuss your options on 07 3822 8178.

The ‘Industrial Style Home’ Trend

The ‘Industrial Style Home’ trend has been one of the most popular building trends in recent times due to its bare, rugged appearance that is also minimalistic and stylish. It is a trend that brings both the style of the modern and the charm of the old together in a timeless, unique fashion perfect for many homeowners.

Industrial Style Home Characteristics

There are many characteristics to the industrial home though some of the most prominent include the ‘lived in’ feel, rustic finishes and the minimal open plan warehouse vibe. Though, this doesn’t mean that your home has to look uncomfortable.

The industrial style home encourages warm, yet neutral tones throughout your features and finishes which work to great effect along with bare materials such as wood, metal and concrete which can be stunningly displayed throughout the home.

new homes - new home builders brisbane bayside

Features and Finishes

As the inspiration for the industrial home comes from the warehouses, factories and industrial buildings of old your finishes should be of a similar look – neutral and texture focused. Thus, exposed brick, polished metal, pipework and industrial timber works well with a straight lined or blocked look to the home.

Feature elements that you should strive to incorporate into an industrial style home include minimal and functional furniture, exposed pipework, warm industrial lighting, polished concrete flooring and machinery parts. All of these features will help tie the whole home together with your tones and finishes.

An Environmentally Friendly Design Trend

The best part of the industrial home is that you can incorporate recycled finishes and features into your home. This makes the home more environmentally friendly and reduces your carbon footprint by repurposing existing items.

Whether you choose to add old railway sleepers, scraped pipework or old fashioned machinery there is a place for all your industrial recyclables in this style of home. You can also add a little contrast and a splash of colour with old paintings and picture frames. Black and white photos work well too as a finishing touch to this amazing style trend.

If you are looking to build a custom industrial style home contact us today and we can discuss your options on 07 3822 8178.
